Sable Goat

The Sable goat breed is a breed of goat whose heritage can be traced to Saanen goats from Switzerland; they were brought to the U.S by the Europeans. Also known as the Sable Saanen, these goats were recognized as a separate breed. However, before they were given that recognition, they were often culled.

The Sable goat breed have been identified to have recessive genes which have given them a certain characteristic of having different color variations. The Sable goat is fondly referred to as a “Saanen in party clothes.” Saanens are also considered to be breed variations of Alpine goats. Sable goats may come in any colored combination except for light cream or white. It is worth noting that white Saanens do not thrive well in sunny, hot climates and their productivity rates significantly decrease. Hence, they are not ideal to raise in tropical countries.

The Sable goat breed is the result of a play of genetics; the combination of recessive genes from the dam and the sire. In the books, a photo of a Sable goat does not do justice to its complex color patterns.

According to goat-related health books and publications, the color patterns of the Sable goat breed can be quite complex. A colored coat is said to be the result of two recessive genes from each parent. As long as farmers and breeders continue to raise and promote Saanens, the Sable goat breed heritage will live on.

The Sable goat breed is medium or large in size, taking after the body structure of Saanen members. Sable goats weigh around 65 kilograms with plenty of vigor and rugged bones. The height of female Sable goat reaches around 30 inches or more at the withers while a buck can reach up to 32 inches or more.

The general appearance of this animal is heavy, tall and rangy. The body of a Sable goat is very long, wide and deep with a sign of well-sprung ribs leading to the rear. The Sable goat also belongs to a herd that has a noted straight back with a very slight slope on the rump. The legs of the Sable goat are long and squarely set, characterized by straight and strong limbs that are wide apart.

The ears of the Sable and Saanen goat breeds are quite similar, with a side by side photo of them exhibiting large and upright characteristics with round tips facing forward. Sable goat breeds have short and fine hair, a wide and long head set in a dished or straight face, working towards a strong jaw and deep muzzle.
